The U.S. government is not planning to fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, also known as food stamps or EBT) or the Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) program for the month of November.
This could change, with some states suing to press the government to release emergency funds to cover the programs. In the meantime, some states are still funded for WIC (although they may be cutting which products are available). In the meantime, parents across the nation are panicking about how they’ll feed their children, especially their infants. A formula can be extremely expensive!
Bobbie Baby Formula is trying to help bridge the gap and make it easier for families to access the formula their babies need.
The Cost Of Feeding A Baby
The cheapest baby formulas on the market tend to run about $20 per can, and others (which may be needed for problems like lactose intolerance, reflux, and other issues) can be much more expensive. That may last around 3 days, or less. WIC can provide around 10 cans per month (this may vary depending on the baby’s age, the state, and other factors).
That means that even with WIC, families are often buying at least some of their own formula. Fortunately, SNAP also covers baby formula, so families who qualify for both can use their SNAP benefits to supplement additional cans.
Unfortunately, however, in November, many families will suddenly find themselves without either WIC or SNAP, meaning they suddenly need to find an extra few hundred dollars (or more) just so their baby can eat — in a time when everyone is already stretching every dollar to its limit and still coming up short.
Here’s The Deal
Bobbie Baby Formula is offering its Organic Original Baby Formula at a discount price for those who would typically use SNAP benefits to make their purchase.
You’ll need a copy of your SNAP eligibility letter to qualify. Then head to the Bobbie website and add a can or two of the formula, usually $28, to your cart for only $14 each.
As the company explains:
When funding stops, feeding can’t….This discount is our way of helping families cover the out of pocket cost of essential infant nutrition.
The offer is only for new customers, and there’s a limit of 2 cans, but it’s a deal that can help families get through the next week and provide an extra boost of support while food banks and other resources are overwhelmed.
Remember To Use Formula Safely!
When funds are tight, parents are often tempted to make less safe decisions to fill their babies’ bellies.
Remember never to water formula down. Mix it as directed, unless your pediatrician has advised otherwise.
Never use a formula that has expired, or been contaminated, or is in a damaged container.
In a pinch, contact your local health department and/or social services offices, and your pediatrician. They sometimes have extra cans or samples available.
You can also check with local churches, food banks, and community groups. Especially right now, these are all taking extra steps to help feed children and babies in their communities.
